Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake (locally known as Dam sait) is a reservoir in the hills 15 km (9.3 mi) north of Shillong in the state of Meghalaya, India. It was created by damming the Umiam River in the early 1960s. The principal catchment area of the lake and dam is spread over 220 square km.

Often compared to the stunning lakes of Scotland. Umiam Lake is also a famous picnic spot. Spread over a huge area, it gives a treat to the eye and soul for nature lovers. Mesmerising view of the lake makes you feel to stare it for hours and hours.

This lake also consist of a water sports complex, Nehru park and Orchid Tourist Home. They provide a variety of water sport activities. You can select the water activities according to your skill. There are a numeral adventurous and fun activities for children to do at Umiam Lake. Apart from boating, there are other water sports and fun activities that children can indulge themselves in, under the guidance of their guardians.

The name of this tourist spot came from a huge stone which was in the shape of an elephant. However, with time, the stone was gone in the year of 1897 due to an earthquake. 6. Sweet Falls. What is something really interesting to know about the Sweet Falls is the fact that it has been the cause of just too many tragic stories and yet has been named Sweet Falls. These waterfalls are around 315 ft in their height and are around 5 km away from the Happy Valley. But if you might want to visit these falls then you would be a little disappointed to know that the route to this destination is not very well maintained thus it might become a little difficult to visit here.
